Statue
created - c.1668-1670 The statue is part of a group of 16
installed between May 1669 and August 1670.
Sculptor
- Lazzaro Morelli Morelli carved this statue as part of a
homogeneous group which includes numbers (111) to (115)
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The saint is shown holding
his vestments, and the palm of martyrdom with his right hand.
He lays the other hand on his chest.
St
Martin summoned the Lateran Council of 649 to deal with the
Monothelites. He was actually kidnapped from the Lateran
Basilica by the exarch at Ravenna acting under the orders of
Emperor Constans II. After imprisonment at
Constantinople he was sent to the Crimea, where he died of
ill-treatment.
