St. Marcellus - Pope
Born 255
Died - 16 January 309

Feastday - 16 January

Statue created - c.1668-1670
The statue is part of a group of 16 installed between May 1669 and August 1670.

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli
Attribution to Morelli appears certain.  Here the palm of martyrdom and tiara are identical to Saints Martin (113), Sylvester (114) and Marcellinus (115)

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The Pope is represented beardless wearing a tiara,  and in pontifical vestments. He holds the palm of martyrdom and is in the act of bringing the right hand to his chest.

Marcellus was pope for six months.  Maxentius had him seized and sent into exile, where he worked as a slave in the stables.  His relics are at San Marcello al Corso in Rome.
