Installed - c.1702-1703 On 18 July 1702 Alignini agreed
to make the statue, which he delivered on 14 March 1703
Sculptor
- Antonio Alignini In 1702 he received two payments of 10
scudi, and the following year the balance of 60 scudi. This is
the only known work of the artist.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine This classical sculpture
shows an originality and mastery of technique, especially in
the rendering of the details of the face, hair and hands. Her
right hand originally held a palm of martyrdom.
Juliana
was a martyr that was beheaded. Her relics were transferred
first to Pozzuoli, Cumae, and then finally to Naples. They are
found in one of the side chapels of the abbey church of
Montevergine..
