St. Balbina
Died - before 595 in Rome

Feastday - 31 March

Statue Installed - ca. 1667-1668

Sculptor - Giovanni Maria de Rossi
Attributed to Rossi because he was paid from August 1667 to November 1668 for eight statues.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine

The ledgend of St Balbina was that she was a virgin martyr found guilty of being a Christian and sentenced to death by Hadrian.

All we know for certain is that a titulus church was founded on the Aventine Hill in Rome that preserved her name for veneration.  Her date is "ante 595" since that is the earliest documented reference to her church. She may have been one of the early martyrs or simply the benefactress of a church in her name.
