The
ledgend of St Balbina was that she was a virgin martyr found
guilty of being a Christian and sentenced to death by Hadrian.
All
we know for certain is that a titulus church was founded on
the Aventine Hill in Rome that preserved her name for
veneration. Her date is "ante 595" since that is the
earliest documented reference to her church. She may have been
one of the early martyrs or simply the benefactress of a
church in her name.
