St. Spyridon
Born - 270
Died - 348 in Cyprus

Feastday - 12 December

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli

Statue created - c. 1668-1670
This was part of the group of 16 erected between May 1669 and August 1670.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
Dressed in episcopal vestments, he has a short bearded face turned to the right.  His right hand is raised and his left holds the palm of martyrdom.

In the persecution of Diocletian he had one eye removed and was sent as a slave to a copper mine on Cyprus, which was usually a fatal experience. However, he survived and is traditionally considered to have been at the Council of Nicaea -although his name is not in the extant list of signatories. He was bishop of Trimythous and died in peace on Cyprus.
