St. Romanus
Died - c. 258
Feastday - 9 August
Sculptor
- Lazzaro Morelli
Statue
Installed - c.1665-1667 This statue is part of a group of
24 that were placed between September 1662 and March 1667.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The holy soldier is
represented in an attitude identical to that of St Dionysus
(96), although in reverse. His left hand is raised
toward St Stephen, the right holds the palm of martyrdom.
The Roman
Martyrology 2004 has: " A
martyr in the catacomb of St Lawrence on the Via Tiburtina,
c.258." So it is thought that he was martyred in the same
persecution as St
Laurence, but there is no evidence that the two were connected.
He has been refered to as Romanus Ostiarius in the past.
