Statue
Installed - c. 1703 On 11 January 1703 Canusi agreed to
execute the statue and was given until 18 June.
Sculptor
- Fabio Canusi He was given a payment of 80 scudi which
was received by Giovanni Maria Baratta.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The saints right hand is
raised in a gesture of blessing. His left, in accordance
with the Eastern tradition, holds a book.
Nicholas was Bishop of Myra (modern-day Turkey). He had a
reputation for secret gift-giving, a practice celebrated on
his feast day, and thus became the model for Santa Claus. The
Roman Martyrology states that he is famous for his sanctity,
and for the power of his intercession before the throne of
grace.
