St.George
Died - c. Early 4th Century

Feastday - 23 April

Statue Installed - c.1703
Documents show that in July 1703 Ottoni had already finished the statues of St Nerus, St Achilles and St George.

Sculptor - Lorenzo Ottoni
He received 80 scudi for the statue and 20 for the dragon.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
St George wears a military helmet, breastplate and cloak.  He is in the act of raising his right arm which holds a spear, as a dragon emerges around his legs.

The spear was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and was probably originally a sword.

Though there is little doubt that St George was a historical person, many fanciful stories developed about him. The Roman Martyrology accepts that he was a martyr at Lydda in the Holy Land.
