Statue
created - c.1666 This statue is part of a group of 24
installed above the colonnade entrances. The Alexander VII
Coat of Arms that is nearby was placed on 1 July 1666.
Sculptor
- Unknown The roughly modeled statue is not attributable
to any of the known sculptors active at this time.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The fingers of the left
hand appear to be damaged.
The
holy Roman matron was the daughter of Quintus Aurelius
Symmachus, consul in 485, and condemned to death by Theodoric
in 525.
As a
widow, she founded a hospital and convent on the Vatican Hill
near St Peter's.
