St. Crescentius
Born - c.292
Died - c.303

Feastday - 14 September, removed from the 2004 Roman Martyrology

Sculptor - Jean-Baptiste Theodon
He was paid 80 scudi for each of his statues and 20 scudi for attributes.

Statue created - c.1703
Theodon was commissioned for three statues which he delivered before 3 August 1703. He was engaged in several works for the Vatican Basilica.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The saint is depicted as a Roman soldier with helmet, armor and cloak. He once held a spear in his left hand, removed in the 1792 restoration.

St Crescentius, according to legend, was the young son of a Roman patrician couple who fled to Perugia in the persecution of Diocletian. There the father St Euthemius died of natural causes, but Crescentius was brought back to Rome to be executed on
the Via Salaria. The problem is that he was eleven
years old, too young to be a Roman soldier.. He is sometimes associated with St George (48), because he is shown stepping on the legendary dragon.
