Installed - c.1702-1703 Fantasia agreed to execute the
statue on 13 January 1702 and delivered it on 5 August 1703.
Sculptor
- Antonio Fantasia He received a down payment of 10 scudi
and a balance of 70 scudi.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The saint, positioned next
to his brother Damian with whom he was martyred, is depected
with a beard, wrapped in heavy drapery, and without
attributes.
Saints
Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers, physicians, and early
Christian martyrs under Diocletian. The twin martyrs are
invoked in the Canon of the Mass, and the Litany of the
Saints.
The
Roman Martyrology accepts the tradition that they were
martyred at Cyrrhus, which is now a ruined city called Khoros
in Syria.
