St. Charles Borromeo
Born - 2 October 1538
Died - 3 November 1584

Feastday - 4 November
Canonized - 1 November 1610 by Pope Paul V

Statue created - c.1671
This statue is part of a group of 16 that were installed between August 1670 and March 1673.

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli
This statue is cited along with St Philip Benizi (123) and St Anthony of Padua (126) in the final payments to Morelli in October and November 1671.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The saint is in priestly garb represented in the act of devotion to the crucifix. Compared to St Philip Neri (124) and St Anthony of Padua (126), this figure denotes a certain immobility due to facial expression.

St Charles Borromeo was created cardinal and commendatory archbishop of Milan in 1560 by his uncle Pope Pius IV, when aged only twenty and still a layman. Commendatory meant that he received the episcopal revenues without having to perform any episcopal duties. This affected his conscience, so he had himself secretly ordained and consecrated as a bishop in 1563. He became one of the great reformers during the Counter-Reformation.
