St. Catherine
of Alexandria Died - c. Early Fourth Century
Feastday
- 25 November
Statue
created - c. 1662-1665 One of the 24 installed between
September 1662 and March 1665
Sculptor
- Lazzaro Morelli This statue is so akin to St Agnes
(43) as to leave no doubt about the identity of the sculptor.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine Catherine is dressed in a
tunic with a crown on her head. On her right, she leans
against a wheel, a symbol of her martyrdom. Her left
hand holds a scroll, the right holds the trunk of the palm of
martyrdom.
The
Roman Martyrology mentions the tradition that she was involved
in philosophical discussions (which explains the scroll that
she holds) at Alexandria in Egypt, and that she was enshrined
at her monastery in the Sinai.
