Bodyguards hold Pope John Paul II after he was shot 13 May 1981 on Saint Peter's Square. Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turk who attempted to assasinate the pope, has asked Turkish authorities to briefly let him out of jail so he can attend the pontiff's funeral, his lawyer Mustafa Demirbag said.
