St. Theodore of Tyro

Born - unknown
Died - c. 306 in Turkey

Feastday - 17 February

Statue created - c.1665-1667
The statue is part of a group of 24 that were installed between September 1662 and March 1667.

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli
Attributed to Morelli because of the connection with the statues of St Dionysus (96) and St Romanus (99)

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The saint is represented as a young Roman soldier. He has a head of curly hair that is lifted to the sky.  The left hand is brought to his chest, while the right holds a palm of martyrdom, now deteriorated.

The only reliable information that we have about St Theodore is that he was a martyr in the early 4th century. The Roman Martyrology mentions a speech by St Gregory of Nyssa that reads, "At Amases on the Hellespont, the passion of St Theodore Tyro, who was thoroughly beaten for adhering to Christianity in the reign of the emperor Maximian and then burned."
