St. Modestus - Martyr
Died - c. 303 in Lucania

Statue created - c.1702-1703
In April 1702 Ferretti began work on the statue which he delivered the following year.

Sculptor - Giuseppe Ferretti
During 1703 he received two payments, for 20 and 10 scudi, then a final payment for 50 scudi. This is the only know work of Ferretti.  The treatment of drapery and hair recalls the two statues, Sts Nereus (88) and Achilleus (89)

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
He is depicted as a mature man with a beard, in Roman dress with a short tunic and cloak over his right shoulder.  His left hand hold the palm of martyrdom.

The legendary tutor of St Vitus (74).  According to the legend, Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia were martyrs under Diocletian. Due to a lack of historical information, Vitus and Crescentia were removed from the Roman Martyrology 2001.
