St. John Chrysostom
Born - c.349
Died - 14 September 407

Feastday -  13 September

Statue created - c.1668-1669
The statue is part of the group of 16 installed between 1 May 1669 and 5 August 1670.

Sculptor - Giovanni Maria De Rossi
He received payments for his five statues in December 1668 and December 1669. De Rossi was the sculptor most adherent to the Bernini style.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The saint is represented as a bearded bishop with vestments of the Greek rite.  Unusual for him, a miter covers his head.  The book he holds is a symbol of his vast literary output.

He was represented by Bernini, along with the Saints Athanasius, Ambrose and Augustine, at the sides of the Chair of St Peter.

St. John Chrysostom was Archbishop of Constantinople and Doctor of the Church. The term Chrysostom meaning "golden-mouthed" was given because of his great eloquence.
