St. Fabian - Pope and Martyr
Born - c.200
Died - 250

Feastday - 20 January

Statue Installed - c.1702-1703
On 13 January 1702 Mentinovese undertook to execute the statue, which he finished in February 1703.

Sculptor - Pietro Mentinovese
In 1702 he received a down payment of 10 scudi, and the following year the balance of 70 scudi. This work is very different from the angels he made for the church of the Holy Shroud, from designs by Antonio Gherardi.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
He is dressed in bishop's robes and his miter has a single crown. For the treatment of details, this statue recalls Sts Nereus (88) and Achilleus (89).

St Fabian was created Pope in 230 and died in prison in 250, under the persecution of Decius. He is famous for the legendary circumstances of his papal election, where a dove descended upon his head. His feastday is when he was buried in the catacombs of Callixtus, and St Cyprian provided an extant eulogy.
