St. Dionysus
Died - c.220

Feastday - 20 September
Removed from 2004 Roman Martyrology

Statue created - c.1665-1667
It was one of the 24 placed on the colonnade between September 1662 and March 1667.

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli
Morelli was the most prolific of the artists working for Bernini on the colonnade statues, with over 45 of the saints attributed to him.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The saint is represented in breastplate with a cloak that fall from the shoulders. He raises the right arm while the left holds the palm of martyrdom, which now remains only a stalk.

The legend of Dionysus involves a group of martyrs crucified at Perga in Pamphylia (now in Turkey). He was a soldier of the Roman army at the time of Antonius Pius that converted to Christianity upon witnessing the martyrdom of St Theodore.
