Statue
created - c.1665-1667 It was one of the 24 placed on the
colonnade between September 1662 and March 1667.
Sculptor
- Lazzaro Morelli Morelli was the most prolific of the
artists working for Bernini on the colonnade statues, with
over 45 of the saints attributed to him.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The saint is represented
in breastplate with a cloak that fall from the shoulders. He
raises the right arm while the left holds the palm of
martyrdom, which now remains only a stalk.
The legend of Dionysus involves a group of martyrs crucified
at Perga in Pamphylia (now in Turkey). He was a soldier of the Roman army at the time of
Antonius Pius that converted to Christianity upon witnessing the
martyrdom of St Theodore.
