created - c.1669 It was part of a group of statues erected
between May 1669 and August 1670.
Sculptor
- Filippo Carcani He received payments from May to August
1669 for a total of 80 scudi. This statue differs from most of
the others because of its strong dynamism.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine This statue of the Pope
with tiara, large cope and full beard, is characterized by a
twisting movement to the left. Frowning with open mouth,
and eyes fixed in the distance, it imparts a suffering
expression.
There was a legend that he was consecrated by St Peter.
Clement was the leading member of the church in Rome, and sent
a letter to the church of Corinth ("First Letter of St Clement
to the Corinthians"). He was martyred in the time of Trajan.
